Posted by Chris and Angela Dinnell on July 12, 2022

Moving day can be a stressful day, and it’s sure to be a long one too. Since moving is our specialty, we thought we would compile a list of tips to help your moving day go as smoothly as possible! Read on if you have an upcoming move and want to be motivated to pull it off without the headache.

If you have booked a moving company, planning those details out weeks (if not months) in advance is recommended. It’s also a smart idea to call them again the week leading up to the move to absolutely ensure that they are on the same page as you, in regards to the size of the truck, time and date, and the number of movers. If you are renting a truck, follow the same plan of booking well in advance, and confirming that reservation and pick-up location (and the size of the truck!) the week leading up. So many people have issues with these things, so a triple check does not hurt!

Make sure you label the moving boxes, but it also doesn’t hurt to be really specific. Rather than labeling a box with “Kitchen”, label it with “Kitchen- plates and bowls” or “Kitchen – seasonal dishware”. When you are unpacking, you will want to unload your essentials first, so that detail makes a big difference on moving day.

Food! Make sure you have a food plan for the day of, so your team of movers is well fed. Pre-making sandwiches and having fruit and snacks on hand all day works like a charm. Order the greasy heavy pizza for after the job is done. You don’t want unenergized moving help!

If you have kids, giving them a clear picture of what moving day will look like in advance is ideal, so they aren’t nagging at you all day to set up their beds and bring in their boxes first. Let them know that there is a process that you would like to follow and that it will all be done by the end of the day.

Pack up your fridge on moving day morning, and take it over in your car to unpack immediately. This way the food stays fresh, and you have your essential food items ready to eat when needed.

Lastly, have some cleaning supplies out and carry them in the car. Hopefully, your new home will be clean to your standards, but often it won’t be. You might want to do some light cleaning before unpacking, and knowing where your supplies are will be a stress relief.
